The Classroom

BUSSPP 0020: Your Career Success is designed to help you jump-start your participation in professional development activities. This one-credit orientation course covers the internship and job search process, the job application process, and the exploration of your professional competencies and preferred career path. All transfer students are required to take the course.

As a transfer student, you will want to plan your curriculum carefully to stay on track for graduation. We know that you also want to maximize the time that you have in the Pitt Business program. For that reason, academic advising is especially important for transfer students. We offer personalized advising that will help you make your time at Pitt Business a success.

The University of Pittsburgh is a world-class institution offering world-class resources. Don’t forget to take advantage of this! Some helpful campus resources include the Math Assistance Center, Writing Center, and the University Counseling Center for mental health services.

For business courses, students can gain additional assistance through faculty office hours and meetings, help sessions, and recitations. Some Pitt Business student organizations (such as Beta Alpha Psi for accounting) provide tutoring.

If you have transferred to Pitt Business from another college or university, remember to submit your final official college transcript when your last semester at that college is complete. It is important to do this in a timely manner. Doing so will allow Pitt Business to update your transfer credit.

Transfer credit impacts your Pitt credit total and can have a bearing on financial aid eligibility, class standing, registration appointment assignment, and more.

Remember to check out our Transfer Credit Policies.

Transfer Tip #1: Look for an introductory email from your new Pitt Business academic advisor and respond promptly

The City

Make sure to check the Handshake portal for information about upcoming Career Development programs. For example, each fall our students participate in the Pitt Business Career Development Conference. This event is attended by more than 80 world-class organizations that are seeking to hire our students for jobs and internships. The event includes industry panels, a luncheon with a keynote speaker, and a job fair.

In the spring, students can also connect with organizations seeking to fill internship and full-time positions at the Pitt Business Job and Internship Fair. You should put these events (and more) on your calendar and plan to attend!

Tips from Current Students

We surveyed some current Pitt Business students about strategies that have helped them succeed both in and outside of the classroom. Here are some of their top tips:

  • Go to class! And make sure to talk to your professors. They offer a lot of expertise and connections.
  • Take advantage of professors’ office hours and prepare questions ahead of time.
  • Stay organized by using a calendar to record all of your important academic and extracurricular dates. You can even color-code different types of obligations.
  • As soon as you get your syllabi for your classes, add all the key dates for exams and assignments into your calendar.
  • Study for tests in advance. It will help you avoid last-minute cramming! Also, if you don’t understand something, it’s early enough to do something about it.
  • Frontload each week with work and studying so that from Thursday-Sunday it’s a little lighter and you can do things that you enjoy.
  • Make use of the Math Assistance Center and the Writing Center. They are very helpful resources!
  • Take time to do things you enjoy that aren’t business-related. It will reduce stress and make you well-rounded.
  • Take advantage of the academic and career advisors at Pitt Business! They have a lot of insight and resources to offer.
  • Join a Pitt Business student organization in your first semester. You’ll meet students who are in your classes and who share your interests. You will also gain leadership skills and be able to participate in networking and professional events.
  • Take full advantage of BUS 0020. This course will help you jump-start your professional development.
  • Use upperclassmen as a resource. They can offer advice about what classes to take, how to study, how to best organize your class schedule, and when/where to find internships.
  • Sign up for opportunities like the Professional Academies, Industry professional Networks, and the Digital Marketing Institute. You will get to network and gain skills for that industry.
  • Go to events and programs offered by the Career Development Office. Programs like Career Conference and the Job and Internship Fair are an invaluable resource. You never know what kind of opportunities you will find!
  • Take advantage of Mentoring Match. A mentor in your area of interest can provide a lot of great advice and connections.
  • Study abroad, if possible. Students who global experiences say it’s one of their best college experiences. Students who don’t say it’s their biggest regret.
  • Consider doing an international internship. You’ll get both a professional and a global experience at the same time!
