Transfer Credit Policies

Pitt Business Transfer Credit Policies

  • For a course to transfer, a minimum grade of a C must be earned (C- and below will not count). To transfer, courses must be taken for a letter grade (not pass/fail).
  • For a business course to transfer, it must have substantially the same objectives and topical coverage as the Pitt course.
  • Transfer credit for business courses for which there is no equivalent will be coded as CBATRN 0000.
  • Transfer credit for courses applicable to a business major for which there is no equivalent will be coded as BUSFIN 0000, BUSMKT 0000, etc.
  • Maximum of 80 credits may be transferred (including college coursework and AP/IB exams).
  • A maximum of 60 credits may be transferred from a community college.
  • Students may not transfer a course that they have previously taken at the University of Pittsburgh. If the course is to be retaken, it must be retaken at the University of Pittsburgh, not another institution.
  • For the 36-credit core business curriculum – a minimum of 21 credits of the business core must be earned at Pitt. A maximum of 15 credits may be earned at other institutions (including Pitt regional campuses).
  • For the 45-credit core business curriculum that is part of the updated curriculum beginning in Spring 2023 – a minimum of 24 credits of the business core must be earned at Pitt. A maximum of 21 credits may be earned at other institutions (including Pitt regional campuses).
  • Minimum of 50% of the courses applicable to a major (not including the core courses) must be earned at Pitt:
    • 12 of 21 credits in accounting
    • 9 of 15 credits in business information systems
    • 9 of 15 credits in finance
    • 12 of 18 credits in global management
    • 12 of 21 credits in human resources management
    • 12 of 18 credits in marketing
    • 9 of 15 credits in supply chain management
  • After 90 credits applicable to the BSBA degree have been completed, the remaining credits are to be earned at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh campus. An exception to this policy is the completion of approved summer coursework for transfer. Any other exceptions must be submitted to the student’s academic advisor for review and final approval by the Director of Pitt Business Academic Advising.
  • Once enrolled at Pitt, students may not take courses at other colleges for transfer during the regular academic year (fall and spring semesters). If a student is seeking to take a course at another college while also enrolled at Pitt during the fall or spring semester, the student should speak with his or her academic advisor about cross-registration options through the agreement provided by PCHE (the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education).
  • During the summer, Pitt Business students who wish to take a course at another college for transfer may identify an appropriate choice through consultation with their academic advisor and the Pitt Business Pre-approved Course and College Listing.  Once enrolled in Pitt Business, students may not transfer business courses from community colleges.  They may work with their academic advisor to identify and submit for review appropriate business courses offered by other AACSB-accredited business schools.

“Having just transferred into Pitt Business this semester, I have received so much support and have been exposed to so many new and exciting opportunities!”

Haley Johnson
