I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to work with Agency 1903 downtown this summer as their Junior Digital Marketing Manager, through the Tafel Summer Internship Scholarship Program. Agency 1903 is a smaller digital marketing firm based out of Pittsburgh. They service a wide variety of clientele, anywhere from local charities and advocacy groups, to huge multi-million dollar clothing corporations, to various start-ups in up-and-coming fields. There is never a dull day at work!
My previous internship was at a fairly small, casual workplace, so I was prepared for the agency lifestyle. Honestly, my ideal job is one where you can wear Birkenstocks! But, casual doesn’t mean slacking off. Most of the company works around 10 hours a day.
Right out of the gate I was doing competitor research for one of our biggest clients. They were looking to launch a new brand, separate from their other ventures. I have been given the opportunity to take over for my boss and manage projects, making sure we stayed on task and spreading the workload evenly among our designers. Many days I QA (Quality Assure) our new projects, but every day brings something new. You should always be ready to take on what needs to get done.
The best advice I could give another student looking to pursue a digital marketing career is to really hone in on what you can bring to the table. A lot of people have very set roles within a company. For example, roles like graphic designers (mostly Photoshop specific) to web developers. The management division, however, specializes in diverse activities, such as organization, patterning, and strategy.
Smaller firms hire for need, so make you are the person who is going to kick butt at that specific job. You can learn a lot on the job – I now know so much more about Photoshop and client security features than I had ever even imagined before – but to get the job you have to show just how unique you are.
If you want to go into the digital marketing field, apply for all of the internships you can and really develop your passions. It will show come time for the interview!
