What does a day at your internship typically consist of?
Jonathan Howorth: My day-to-day schedule is not very conventional, unlike some other jobs. Typically, my day begins with a meeting with the Director of Marketing, and he gives me specific direction for for that day. I have been able to learn new tasks such as: write radio scripts, find information on possible sponsors for partnerships, and developing fun and exciting activities that will help draw fans to the stadium.
I’m also a member of the “street team”, which is when a group of marketing interns that go out to areas around the city and promote the team by going into different bars, restaurants, and other businesses. We hang posters, pass out schedules, and sometimes give out tickets to the businesses with the goal raising awareness for the Riverhounds.
Jake Damico: We focus a lot on promotions to encourage people to come to the games. The team values my input on ways we can logistically carry out the promotion, whether it be through giveaways, halftime activities, special discounts, etc. We also provide research to help pinpoint possible sponsorship opportunities, writing scripts for several radio deals we have in place, and being a part of our “street team”. It’s rewarding seeing the impact you make on growing the team and growing the sport of soccer.
What is it like working during one of the games?
Jake: I need to be ready for anything thrown at me during the games. So far, I have handed out programs at the entrance, sold 50/50 raffle tickets, worked as a parking attendant, helped set up several halftime promotions , and was even the mascot for one game (his name is Amo, it was a lot of fun!).
Has this internship changed your career trajectory?
Jonathan: For me, the internship has confirmed that I would like my career to be in the sports industry. I am hopeful this internship will provide me with relevant experience to land a full-time job in sports after school.
Jake: This opportunity has helped direct my career trajectory toward the sports industry. My hope is that my experience with a smaller team can me a more attractive candidate because I’ve had to tackle so many different tasks. I would not have been able to do this without the Tafel Scholarship!
