The Pitt Business Diverse Leaders Summit, held on Friday, February 7, 2020, provided opportunities for Pitt Business students to collaborate with business professionals by sharing ideas to promote more inclusive practices within the workplace and enhance organizational diversity.
The event featured networking, roundtable discussions, and a keynote by Terry Roberts, Senior Director – General Counsel and Inclusion & Diversity Chair at American Eagle Outfitters.
“We all have a story – everyone in this room. It’s happy, it’s sad, it’s inspiring, it’s difficult, it’s REAL,” said Roberts, who spoke on the importance of workplace inclusivity, and how organizations benefit from having employees who perform well when they feel valued and able to be their most authentic selves.
The agenda and topics were prepared by members of student organizations, including the Roberto Clemente Multicultural Business Association, Human Resources Organization, Association for Leaders in Diversity and Inclusion, Society for International Business, Women in Business, Women in Sports & Events, and Smart Women Securities.
Roundtable discussions were based on workplace scenarios – students and employers worked together to find solutions to diversity issues, while employers shared insights on the ways in which their companies provide training, affinity groups, and individual resources to employees. Students were offered advice on recognizing a company’s true culture and values from interview to hire, and many echoed that it is as important to look at what a company has on its walls to the way they interact with each other.
Companies in attendance included American Eagle Outfitters, BNY Mellon, Clark Associates, DICK’s Sporting Goods, Eaton, EY, Kennametal, KPMG, PNC, PwC, and UPMC.
Says Anthony Rodi, Interim Associate Dean of Pitt Business, “Diversity and inclusion in the workplace are very powerful and impactful. Exposing our students to these issues and how they can overcome them helps prepare them as future leaders.”
