My name is Erin Shriber, I am a senior majoring in Marketing along with a Communication Certificate, and I am one of the Professional Development Consultants (PDC’s) for this upcoming school year.
My path to Pitt Business was different than that of most other students. I attended two local universities before deciding to transfer here!
I know that coming into Pitt Business as a transfer student can be a challenge, but if you’re proactive in getting the guidance you need, it can be much easier.
Tips for Transfer Students:
Joining student clubs and professional organizations is easy and makes the transfer process smoother. I joined Phi Beta Lambda, which has many opportunities to develop leadership skills, network with professionals, build friendships, and explore the city.
Ask For Help
Pitt Business has so many people willing to help you. Whether they are academic advisors, career advisors or your professors, they’ll help you find your academic and career paths. Problems such as choosing a major, finding an internship, reviewing resumes, mock interviews (and more), are easier to solve with their help. The sooner you meet with them, the better prepared you will be when you begin your internship and job search.
Make an appointment in Handshake to meet with all Pitt Business staff or sign up for the Pitt Business Mentoring Match program to get help from an alumni.
This past summer, I went on the Plus 3 Ireland trip, which is specifically made for transfer students. It was an incredible experience! I made so many great friends and strengthened existing friendships. I also developed transferrable skills that I will be able to use after I graduate.

Step outside of your comfort zone
Transferring to Pitt can be both exciting and intimidating. Stepping outside of your comfort zone can make your transfer experience much easier and fun. Try talking to people in your classes, joining a student organization, exploring the campus, and riding the buses to new destinations throughout the city. I think you’ll find that the city is really your campus and there is so much to explore.
Take advantage of what Pitt Business has to offer!
Pitt Business is always buzzing with activity. It feels like there is something new happening every day. The first thing you’ll likely see once you reach the second floor are the tabling events put on by the student organizations and business recruiters. These events are a great way to get to network with recruiters and learn about the internship and job opportunities they are promoting. Definitely reach out to them and say hello because you’ll likely see them again at the career fair, so create a strong first impression. There are also many workshops that take place throughout the year, where you can learn more about certificate programs, international programs, and more. You can easily see what is taking place throughout the year by checking Handshake.
I hope these tips help you with your transfer process into Pitt Business. If you have any questions or just want to talk about transferring to Pitt feel free to stop by and schedule an appointment with me in the career office. Have a great year!
