Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Through an array of interactive courses, certificate programs, student organizations, dedicated faculty and Entrepreneurs in Residence, and other resources, the growing community of student entrepreneurs at Pitt Business has the support it needs to turn an idea into a viable business venture.

At Pitt Business, our students develop business skills in both innovation and entrepreneurship. Innovation is the act of creating new products, services, or business processes—or improving upon existing ones. Entrepreneurship is the process by which the innovation is commercialized and begins generating profitable returns for the organization.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are core values at Pitt Business, and students have ample opportunities to develop their ideas into new startup ventures.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programs

The following programs within the University of Pittsburgh are in place to give Pitt Business students the real-world experience and support they need in order to become successful entrepreneurs.

Blast Furnace

The Blast Furnace is a student accelerator which provides access to deep mentor networks, inspirational co-working space, and a rich curriculum for student startups to prepare them to create and grow their business.

The Big Idea Competition

The annual Big Idea Competition is an entrepreneurial idea competition in which finalists present to a panel of expert judges along with Pitt students, faculty, alumni, entrepreneurs, investors, and program sponsors. The goal of the competition is to showcase and support the growing innovation network at Pitt.

Smash Mash

This is an entrepreneurial event where students come together to form teams around their ideas, and are put through an intensive development process ending with final presentations and prizes awarded by judges. Experienced students, faculty, and entrepreneurs are in attendance to help the students.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Courses and Certificate Programs

Courses

The following entrepreneurship courses will provide you with a deep understanding of entrepreneurship that you can apply directly to your business career:

  • The Entrepreneurship Process (BUSORG 1640)
  • Corporate Entrepreneurship (BUSORG 1645)
  • Social Entrepreneurship (BUSENV 1790)
  • Commercializing New Technologies (BUSSPP1750)
  • Product Development (BUSMKT 1431)
  • Accounting Information Systems (BUSACC1236)
  • Investment Management (BUSFIN 1321)
  • Advertising and Sales Promotion (BUSMKT 1426)

Certificate Programs

Students can complement their major with a certificate. Whereas the major demonstrates the student’s mastery of skill and knowledge in a specific discipline, the certificate adds another area of expertise that increases their marketability to employers.

The CPIE is designed to provide students with an exposure to entrepreneurship whether their goal is to start and build a business or drive innovation inside a traditional organization.

The CPIB offers Pitt Business students with a strong interest in the global aspects of business to gain an advantage in competing for the most attractive internships and full-time positions in highly internationalized firms.

The CSCM provides Pitt Business students with the opportunity to understand important concepts in supply chain management and develop managerial and technical skills which are highly valued in today’s corporate environment.

Entrepreneurs in Residence

Pitt Business Entrepreneurs in Residence (EIRs) focus on mentorship and development. If you have an idea or young business, they can help you think through critical issues and evaluate opportunities to launch and grow your business.

Students may visit with the EIRs by scheduling an appointment in Handshake.
