To celebrate the University of Pittsburgh Year of Global Initiative, Pitt Business is highlighting alumni who have taken their work #ToTheWorld through international roles after graduation.
Meet Ian Buggs, a 2003 graduate of Pitt Business who majored in finance. He is the finance director for consumer health in the Middle East region for Pfizer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. We caught up with him recently for a brief Q&A.
How did you get to the position and location you are at now?
I have been living in Dubai and working for Pfizer for five years. I was promoted to my current role of director in 2017.
What is the favorite aspect of your job/daily workflow?
I marvel every day at my interactions with people of all different backgrounds and ethnicities. On my team, we have South Africans, Canadians, Egyptians, Pakistanis, Nigerians, Germans, Jordanians… it goes on and on. It’s great to see so many different nationalities and cultures come together for a common cause to deliver quality products to our customers.
How did Pitt Business specifically help you to get to where you are today?
Pitt Business gave me the coursework to start asking global questions and explore my interest in international business even further.
Favorite Pitt Business memory?
My favorite memories stem from the relationship I developed with my adviser during my tenure at Pitt Business. I felt as though she truly cared about and looked out for my best interest. She also gave me “real talk” when I needed it. This personalized relationship helped me get to where I am today.
What is your advice to current students planning an international career?
Study abroad, learn another language, network and establish mentors with people who have done it and can help you navigate the world
