Two long-tenured professors from the University of Pittsburgh College of Business Administration, Ray Jones and Deborah Good, were named to the Poets & Quants 2018 Top 50 Undergraduate Business Professors awards list.
The recognition honors the world’s best undergraduate business professors. Nominations are made by students, faculty, and administrators at the top-ranked programs. Pitt Business joined the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Georgia Tech, Lehigh, North Carolina, Notre Dame, UC Berkeley, the University of Texas-Austin as the only institutions with two faculty members named to the Top 50 list.
Jones, who has been with Pitt Business since 1991, was lauded in his award write-up for making a “profound impact on students of all business majors by challenging them to consider the broader issues of ethics, social responsibility, and stakeholder management.”
Jones received special praise for the co-creation of the school’s Certificate Program in Leadership and Ethics, through which students have completed more than 100 consulting projects with Pittsburgh organizations, with clients ranging from banks and real estate developers to a local animal shelter.
“Business students like to get out there and make things happen — personally and professionally — so it’s energizing to be up in front of them,” said Jones, in his Q&A interview with Poets & Quants.
Good, who teaches courses across human resources management, was described as being “a pillar of the human resources management faculty.” Her courses in negotiations, staffing, sports management, and business communication consistently receive high marks from students because they recognize her genuine desire to see them succeed.
Good, in her award Q&A with Poets & Quants, said she enjoys teaching undergraduate business students things that prepare them for their jobs. “I know that because I get phone calls, letters, and email messages thanking me for preparing them for what they are doing in their jobs,” she told Poets & Quants.
“I am very proud of Professors Jones and Good for being recognized by Poets & Quants as being two of the world’s best undergraduate business professors. The award is yet another confirmation of the high level of commitment and personalized support that they bring to the classroom every day. Professors Jones and Good embody the school’s mission of taking students From the Classroom, To the City, To the World,” says Audrey J. Murrell, associate dean of Pitt Business and director of the David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership.
